Welcome

Hello. I have created this blog as a resource for my fourth grade pupils and their families. I have included links to sites that I use to inform my teaching as well as sites for children. This site is under construction and may take some time to develop as blogging is new to me and I don't quite feel at home in the 21st century. If this goes well, maybe I'll start texting.

Hiking at Raven Rock State Park

I know school hasn't started yet, but one of the reasons I created this blog was to communicate with families all the wonderful things we do at home with our children to help them learn and grow. This is our "homework."

On Sunday, our family went for a five-mile hike at Raven Rock State Park. We hiked for three hours, stopping by the Cape Fear River to enjoy our picnic lunch. We made interesting discoveries on the trail. While we didn't always know what we were looking at, the experience nurtured our daughter's curiosity. Also, our lack of answers led to a discussion about an invention our daughter wanted to design. She explained in great detail, her invention that would scan the object--for example, a bird--and tell you the name, including the latin name, and a fun fact.

So why am I sharing this with you? You do wonderful things with your children, too: ride bikes, care for pets, swim, garden, cook, read, travel, visit museums, sing, camp, etc. I want to make you aware of the ways we teach our children without worksheets, textbooks and required assignments.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.

  1. Hi Mrs. Feola,
I love your new blog and enjoyed reading about the hike with your family. As a parent I agree that sometimes the simplest activities can inspire us to imagine and create. Art is all around us. My family vacation in Maine provided lots of opportunities for designing, creating, imaging and exploring. We didn't have a tv or radio. My daughter and I sat on the dock early one quiet, foggy morning. The air was still and the lake like a mirror. We talked about Romeo and Juliet (we had been reading about it in The English Roses book we brought with us.) We sat for the longest time planning out a play that she would write. We talked about all the parts of theatre and wrote audition lines for the actors. We discussed Shakespeare and his languge and how different it sounded from the way we speak today.
Sometimes all we need is quiet time together together to just read and taland dream. The ideas seem to flow and the creativity begins. It made me realize how important it is to make this quiet talking time in our busy lives.
