Welcome

Hello. I have created this blog as a resource for my fourth grade pupils and their families. I have included links to sites that I use to inform my teaching as well as sites for children. This site is under construction and may take some time to develop as blogging is new to me and I don't quite feel at home in the 21st century. If this goes well, maybe I'll start texting.

Hiking at Raven Rock State Park

I know school hasn't started yet, but one of the reasons I created this blog was to communicate with families all the wonderful things we do at home with our children to help them learn and grow. This is our "homework."

On Sunday, our family went for a five-mile hike at Raven Rock State Park. We hiked for three hours, stopping by the Cape Fear River to enjoy our picnic lunch. We made interesting discoveries on the trail. While we didn't always know what we were looking at, the experience nurtured our daughter's curiosity. Also, our lack of answers led to a discussion about an invention our daughter wanted to design. She explained in great detail, her invention that would scan the object--for example, a bird--and tell you the name, including the latin name, and a fun fact.

So why am I sharing this with you? You do wonderful things with your children, too: ride bikes, care for pets, swim, garden, cook, read, travel, visit museums, sing, camp, etc. I want to make you aware of the ways we teach our children without worksheets, textbooks and required assignments.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.
